Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church is a diverse community of faith helping people experience transformation through connection to Jesus and the church. We live this out every day by connecting the Church to the Community and the Community to the Church.

What We Believe

Core Theological Beliefs
  • The Trinity: Belief in one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 
  • The Bible: The Holy Scriptures are the inspired word of God and the primary authority for faith.
  • Grace: God's unmerited love is active and free to all, working through prevenient (drawing people to God), justifying (forgiving sin), and sanctifying (growing in holiness) grace.
  • Sin and Free Will: Humans are created in God's image, but that image is distorted by sin. God grants free will, enabling people to choose to respond to divine grace.
  • Salvation: Salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection.

Key Practices
  • The Sacraments: The United Methodist Church recognizes two sacraments: Holy Baptism and Holy Communion (open to all believers).
  • The Three General Rules: Originally stated by John Wesley, members strive to "do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God" (often interpreted as seeking justice).
  • Piety and Mercy: Faith is expressed both vertically through works of piety (prayer, worship, Bible reading) and horizontally through works of mercy (serving neighbors and fighting injustice).
  • Social Holiness: Belief that personal holiness cannot be separated from social holiness, driving the church to address poverty, human rights, and community welfare.
