This Sunday, we walked through Genesis 22 and the story of Abraham and Isaac, reflecting on what it meant for Abraham to be asked to sacrifice his “most precious” son. We traced Abraham’s larger story, seeing how God repeatedly provided and kept His covenant, and how this moment uniquely tested whether Abraham loved God for who God is or only for what God gives. We then examined our own lives, asking what good gifts may have become idols and whether we are willing to lay them on the altar. Together, we were invited to trust that God will provide and to love and worship Him simply because He is worthy.

This week's scripture was Genesis 22:1-13
- God is testing our love, not our obedience alone. Throughout Abraham's story, God had always promised something in return for obedience. But in Genesis 22, there was no guarantee—just a command. Abraham's immediate response revealed that his love for God wasn't transactional. We must ask ourselves: Are we following God because of what He provides, or because He is inherently worthy of our worship?
- Our blessings can become our idols. Isaac was God's gift to Abraham—the fulfillment of decades of promises. Yet even this precious gift could not come before Abraham's love for God. What blessings in our lives—career success, financial security, relationships, comfort—have subtly shifted from gifts to idols? God may be calling us to lay these on the altar, trusting that He will provide what we truly need.
- Faith means trusting God's character, even in uncertainty. Abraham traveled three days with the weight of God's command, carrying the wood, facing his son's questions. When Isaac asked where the lamb was, Abraham declared, "God will provide." He didn't know how, but he knew Who. Taking up our cross daily means following Jesus not for warm feelings or community perks, but out of pure commitment to His worthiness.
